I’ve been to my fair share of motorsports even in my lifetime, but when I decided that I was going to go to the Silverstone Classic I thought I would change it up a bit. The camping scene at Silverstone is supposed to be the stuff of legend, at least during Formula 1. So in preperation for that event in 2017, I thought I’d give camping overnight a go. This is the first time in my life I have ever really camped, and for sure the first time I was all on my own doing so.
The reason I wanted to camp was because I wanted to be able to shoot the on track action at sunset. I also wanted to be able to wake up to the sound and smell of racing cars from the confines of a tent I put up myself. Of course, the reason I’m going is to take photographs in the first place. And thankfully, I had plenty of space to carry all my gear. I wanted to shoot anything and everything, and since I was going for 2 full days I damn near brought my entire camera collection only leaving my Minolta CLE at home due to it’s very dense and heavy build.
Life is just getting started once the sun goes down at Silverstone. There is a small festival atmosphere with the concerts that take place each night, but if your to ass whipped to make it you can still hit the pub they’ve built at the campsite. On Friday night I hit the pub and on Saturday night I hit the concert. It’s a great spot to throw back a few pints, I was eager to not have any hangover on Sunday morning so I took it easy. LAME
I felt like a bit of a dick in my tiny coffin tent setup between motor homes and family style tent setups. But whatever, I had a great time camping and felt sad the day I had to leave and pack up my little home. I HIGHLY recommend camping at Silverstone, and the Classic is a great way to get acclimated and find out what is what and where is where!
I’ll be gong back to the Silverstone Classic next year, probably instead of going to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. I’m also incredibly excited about the possibility of shooting the entire thing on film next time. Lets see how we go, developing film is very expensive but I think it just looks so great I may have to do it. Next year maybe I’ll just take the Dynax and CLE, I should start saving for the development costs now.
