This was my first trip to the Silverstone Classic, and boy was it a big one! I had seen beautiful photography from this event many times but my love of all things Goodwood has meant I haven’t had the budged to get out here yet. Well I managed to do it in 2016, and I may be doing this instead of the Goodwood FoS in 2017, only time will tell. But it was one hell of a motor sport event, I spent 2 days and 1 night inside the confines of Silverstone Circuit.
I’m a big fan of shooting film, but lets be honest it’s a pain in the ass and costs a fortune. But once I planned my 2 day trip to the Silverstone Classic I figured I’d take along my Minolta Dynax7 with the Minolta 70-210 F4 with a few rolls of B&W and see what kind of damage I could do.
2012 was the first year I went to the FoS and it blew my mind. Never before had I been around more vehicular energy in my life. So many cars, cars I never thought I’d see, much less get close to. Racing cars with legendary names written on the side. Cars that have set records, cars that have become legends themselves. All here for you to see, hear and touch.
Race tracks are huge, and as a fan it’s not always easy to find the best places to take photos. Not to mention hauling a bunch of camera gear all over is a serious ass kick. So I’m going to fill you in on some the top spots to shoot at Silverstone as a fan, some may be obvious and some may not be so obvious. But without a press pass we need to find as many gaps in the fence as we can right? I hope this list can help both your photography and your lower back, shoulders and neck!
This was my first ever WEC event, and even though I’ve been to Silverstone before I didn’t know what to expect. But one thing blew me away immediately, the ACCESS to eveything. I could go to almost any grandstand, the paddock and even a pit walk. The smaller crowd, and length of the endurance race, meant that all those little gaps in the fencing that are usually jam packed at an F1 race, were open for me to use. If I couldn’t get some nice photos here, I wasn’t going to get them anywhere. The pressure was ON!
